Tell Me About Histoplasmosis
There are many different diseases that wild animals will carry. One that you may have heard a great deal about his histoplasmosis, a disease that is commonly found in animals like bats and birds. This is often referred to as the "cave disease" because it is found in the droppings of animals that commonly live in caves, like birds and bats. The more common name for histoplasmosis is Darling's disease or Ohio Valley disease. It is specifically caused by a fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum, which can also frequently be found in the feces of rats and other rodents.
Seek Help Right Away
This is an extremely dangerous disease if not treated right away. In fact, those who have contracted the AIDS virus have often been found to die from this disease, primarily because their immune system has become so compromised that they are unable to fight the disease. A person who is contracted histoplasmosis will commonly show symptoms within 17 days of their initial exposure. However, it is common to see the first signs of this disease within 10 days. One of the first signs that you may have contracted the illness is difficulty breathing. This often manifests itself as cold or flu like symptoms, and often doctors mistake this disease for tuberculosis or other similar illnesses. Those who are not treated right away face severe complications within three weeks period of time. The fungus will eventually cause severe damage to the vital organs of the body and is fatal and less it has been treated within the first few weeks. In fact, those who been treated after a month are given a minimal chance of survival at best.
How Do They Get the Disease?
What is interesting about this illness is the mode of exposure. This fungus is carried in the excretory tract of animals like birds, bats, and rodents. It is released when the animal defecates. A person usually comes in contact with the fungus when they step on the feces, causing the fungus to be released into the air. The person does not actually get the fungus through their skin. Instead, the particles of fecal matter become airborne and are inhaled. Because of how deadly this fungus is, it is important to protect yourself in areas where rodents, birds, and bats are known to defecate. If you are cleaning in these areas, you should always wear gloves, a mask, and goggles to protect your respiratory system. If you believe you have been exposed to this illness, then you should see a doctor right away. Keep in mind that just one month from initial exposure could be enough of a time duration to make the illness fatal. This is why you need to make sure you act right away. Make sure that the doctor is aware that you have been in an area where you may have been exposed to this illness because of the animals you have come in contact with. Keep in mind that this illness is often misdiagnosed, and you can't afford to have that happen to you.
