What do rats like to eat?

What Do Rats Like to Eat?
Rats are one of the most commonly found animals on earth. They have been so successful because they have lived off of human beings. They eat the food, garbage, and other nutrients that people leave around. They live in structures built by people. They even move from one location to another using our ships, cars, planes, and other modes of transportation. They are truly remarkable how they have thrived off of us.

They Want It All
What helps with their success is the fact that rats will literally eat just about anything. These animals are true omnivores. It doesn't matter whether you are talking about meet, plants, even insects, these animals will eat it. Adding to their diet is the fact that things that would make you puke are things they love. A piece of meat rotting and covered with maggots is an incredibly tasty snack to a rat. Their stomach seems to be made of Teflon, as they will devour just about anything they can get their mouth around. If there is some kind of nutritional value in it, these animals will eat it. This is one of the reasons why you commonly see rats and dumpsters, garbage dumps, and other similar areas where trash is thrown away. They know there is food to find there, and they will eat it.

But What Do They Like Most?
While rats will eat just about anything, certain things will attract them much more readily. These are usually things that have a strong odor to them. Cheese is one such example. It is why it is become the traditional food to use for bait in capturing rats inside a trap. The longer the cheese is out, the stronger the smell. The stronger the smell, the more likely it is to draw the rat. This is why it is one of the most successful choices of bait, but not the only one. Meat, such as beef and chicken, can also be quite successful. As with the cheese, the longer you leave it out the more likely it is that the rats are going to go for it. They love that strong smell, and are going to eat it. However, there are things that certain species of rats enjoy more than others. These are things that go well beyond smell. The old English rat, for example, enjoys such things as leaves, stems, seeds, fruits, and berries. However, they will also eat small animals, both vertebrates and invertebrates. Black rats are known to get inside chicken coops, horse and cow pens, and even in pigsties. They will eat the food of these animals, and will even eat the eggs of chickens. Again, rats are omnivores, and if there is food to be had, they will go after it. You are facing a pretty tough challenge of trying to get rid of rats out of your house. Because they can find food and almost anything that is around, they can take care of themselves. This is why you have to be extra careful about dropping crumbs or leaving almost any nutrients about.
